A native of Vermont, Jody Williams was awarded the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize along with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), for her role as the founding coordinator of the ICBL.

As chief strategist and spokesperson for the campaign, Jody oversaw the growth of the ICBL to more than 1,300 non-governmental organizations in over 85 countries.

Working in an unprecedented cooperative effort with governments, UN bodies and the Red Cross, the ICBL achieved its goal of an international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines in 1997. 156 countries have signed this treaty. It also launched an international movement to clear these silent killers from minefields around the world, and assist the hundreds of thousands of victims.

International organizer and activist, writer and teacher, Jody Williams continues to be a powerful voice for human security, human rights and international law, the role of civil society in international diplomacy, and the power of individual initiative in bringing about social change.

Since February 1998, she has served as a Campaign Ambassador for the ICBL, and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Campaign. In 2007, she served as the Chief of Mission of a UN delegation investigating the situation in Darfur. Her final report on March 16, 2007 documents widespread rape, displacement and other atrocities. In it, she urged the UN to take immediate action to protect the people of Darfur, noting that the Sudanese government and the international community have failed to do so. Jody has also played an important role in the ongoing international negotiations to ban the use of cluster munitions.
